Dreaming of an island with idyllic beaches, amazing hikes, charming villages, and an artsy, inspiring energy? Look no further than Mallorca, just off the coast of Spain. Located right next to its party-animal sibling — Ibiza — Mallorca offers a much calmer and more grounding atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to connect with yourself, go inward while having a solo Eat, Pray, Love-type vacation, and is equally great for a couple or family getaway. Just a heads-up: summers can be extremely hot and busy with tourists. For this reason, I recommend the shoulder seasons — April–May and September–October — to escape the crowds and have more of the island to yourself.

Just as stunning in real life as it looks online, no filter needed.

While it’s perfect for a vacation, it’s also ideal for a longer stay. Whether you’re a digital nomad looking to switch cities or want to try out the lifestyle for the first time, the island has everything you need for that tranquil Southern European vibe you see on Instagram. Personally, as I wrote in my diary, I felt “called” to move to Mallorca when I was looking for a base in Europe. Other than being a huge fan of islands with a theory that I was an isleña in a past life, the slow lifestyle in the off season is what made this island so magical and attractive for me.

Happy under the Spanish sun.

Living on this island means being around yachties in between seasons, artists, magicians, witches, and many others who escaped to this paradise to get away from modern society as we know it. Beautiful both on the coast and inland, this island is a lot more than just beautiful sandy beaches; it’s a place to reconnect and meditate on the beauty of life. So, without further ado, let’s go over all that you need to know for your next Mallorca trip!

First things first, though… How to get to Mallorca?

The most convenient way is by plane. Palma is well connected to major European cities and you can find flights from basically anywhere. There are also direct flights from New York to Palma, making life easier for Americans wanting to experience the island. You can search for the best flight deals on Skyscanner.

If you’re bringing your car, motorbike or pet to the island, you can take a ferry from Barcelona. The best way to reserve your ticket is through Omio to get the best prices.

Best Way to Explore Mallorca

After my Atlantic crossing via hitchhiking boats, I settled down in Mallorca, which is the ideal spot if you’re looking for yacht work in the summer or you just love sipping champagne on sailboats. The marinas and bays are packed with boats of all sizes, and honestly, if you’re a sea lover like myself, one of the best ways to explore the island is by sailing. There are many hidden spots reachable only by boat that guarantee nights full of stars and unforgettable sunsets.

Boat life in Sóller, Mallorca.

Kudos to you if you own a sailboat in Europe but for those who don’t, there are plenty of charter companies to choose from. If you’d rather stick to land, I highly suggest renting a car as it’s practically the only way to get around the island, and trust me, you’ll want to explore far beyond your hotel’s pool with a sea view.

And for cycling enthusiasts, Mallorca is a world-renowned destination, attracting both amateurs and professionals due to its diverse terrain and stunning landscapes.

Where to Stay

If you’re open to not immediately waking up by the sea, I suggest staying in the center of Palma. With its charming alleys, fresh and salty island air, and countless tapa bars that come alive after sunset, it’s the perfect base to explore the rest of the island while getting a sneak peek into the local island life. Alternatively, you could stay in the nearby coastal town of Santa Ponça, or you could consider Sóller or Deià for stunning views and tranquility.

I recommend staying away from Magaluf and S’Arenal for your Spanish island escape, unless you’re specifically looking to party in an Oktoberfest-like atmosphere with Germans and Brits. The southeast coast also offers beautiful spots like Cala D’or with many resort options, however, I am writing this guide with the idea that you will want to explore and drive around the island, and for the ease of it, being closer to Palma is the better choice.

Must-See Places for Your First Visit

Now that you’re settled, it’s time to explore! Mallorca offers endless beauty, from stunning bays and hidden coves to unforgettable sunsets. After living here for a year, I can confidently say that the longer you stay, the more hidden gems you’ll discover. The island’s magic is real, and your biggest challenge will be seeing it all.

As the title says, below is a list of what to see on your first trip, meaning a second trip is definitely needed to dig deeper since the beauty is endless. With that in mind, below are some of the most charming spots—towns and beaches—of Magical Mallorca:

Palma

Potentially your home base, the town of Palma is bustling during the day and at night, especially during the high season. Spend a full day getting lost in the narrow streets of the Old Town, filled with charming historic architecture, local shops and art galleries.

Every corner of Palma screams art.

Enjoy photographing the stunning Palma Cathedral and its views. Be sure to book your ticket online to avoid the crowds if you want to see the inside. For the best panoramic views of the city, head up to Bellver Castle.

Another highlight of Palma is its gastronomy! You’re in Spain after all, so you’ll definitely eat your way around the island. Enjoy the local fresh produce and olive oil based Mediterranean dishes. Do not leave without trying Mallorca’s traditional foods like ensaimada, pa amb oli, and sobrasada.

Ensaimada, an island classic.

Cap De Formentor

Get ready for a gut-wrenching (but scenic!) ride along steep cliffs to reach one of Mallorca’s most breathtaking spots: Cap de Formentor. This iconic lighthouse sits at the northernmost point of the island, and during peak season, the only way to get there is by shuttle bus. Since the road is closed to private vehicles, you can hop on the TIB bus from Palma’s main station for a direct route. The ride might test your nerves, but the views at the end will absolutely be worth it!

Views from the top.

Sóller and Port de Sóller

Sóller makes for an amazing day trip and you can reach it in style via the antique wooden train from Palma. Although it’s quite touristy, the scenic 1-hour journey makes for a truly memorable experience. Once you arrive in town, you’ll be struck by the beautiful old buildings in the main square. You can enjoy exploring the boutiques, art studios, and local artisan shops.

When you’re ready to head to the Port, you can take a charming tram ride that goes directly there. When I first arrived in Port de Sóller, the beautiful, tranquil bay and picturesque harbour took my breath away. We were anchored there just at the beginning of the season, before more boats rolled in, and it felt straight out of a European soap opera. More than once, I considered checking the real estate and basing myself in this quaint bay in the future.

For anyone wanting to spend time in nature hiking, there are many trails to choose from. You can go for challenging mountain hikes, calm seafront tracks, or picturesque country paths. Pick your trail for the day depending on your mood and difficulty level, make sure you pack some water, and don’t forget to download the AllTrails app on your phone for the best hiking experience!

Paparazzi caught me in Port de Sóller.

Sa Calobra

Definitely one of the most iconic spots in Mallorca, Sa Calobra shines with its stunning natural beauty and the challenging road access, making it a popular destination for tourists and cyclists alike. For the ultimate experience, I recommend catching a ferry from Port de Sóller to enjoy the scenic views of the rocky coastline. Once you arrive, you’ll be blown away by the crystal-clear waters and the hidden beach, perfect for swimming and soaking in the beauty of the incredible gorge.

Just look at this water!

And when you’re ready to head back, make sure to drive the winding, snake-like road at least one way. It’s an experience in itself. Try to time it so you’re driving while the sun’s still up, and stop at the lookout spots along the way to take photos and enjoy the view.

Sant Elm

My personal favourite, this fishing village turned tourist destination faces the uninhabited island of Sa Dragonera and transports me to another world every time I visit. The water in this bay is so clear and turquoise blue, it almost hurts your eyes! Spend the day lounging on the beach and swimming with the colourful fish. For hiking fanatics, La Trapa is a coastal trail that starts in Sant Elm, offering jaw-dropping cliffside views that will leave you speechless. Just make sure to check the weather because you don’t want to get caught in a thunderstorm like I did!

Hiking in Sant Elm, up for an adventure?

Port d’Andratx

Just a short drive from the peaceful Sant Elm, this exclusive port town offers a laid-back yet luxurious vibe. No doubt, it’s one of Mallorca’s classiest holiday destinations, home to some of the most stunning luxury villas. It’s the perfect spot to get inspiration for your next yacht purchase or enjoy a nice dinner, as it comes alive after sunset.

Never a boring dinner in Spain.

Valldemossa

Another gorgeous town with narrow cobblestone streets that will take you back in time. It’s easily accessible by car from Palma, just about 20 minutes away. You can’t help but feel inspired just by being here. Valldemossa has long been a haven for artists and writers, including Frédéric Chopin and George Sand. Today, the Valldemossa Chopin Museum is located in the very place where the famous composer and writer once stayed, and it’s open for visits.

Deià

Artsy heaven with a bohemian vibe, relaxed and inspirational. This spot attracts artists from all over the world who choose to settle here. Definitely check it out, soak in the beauty, and enjoy a coffee or meal at one of its trendy spots. You can take the 30-minute walk down to the cala, nestled in a small rocky bay. It’s a pebble beach, but without a doubt, the most beautiful one in Mallorca! You can also reach the beach by car in about 5 minutes, but keep in mind that finding a parking spot becomes nearly impossible during high season.

Santanyí

This town stands out with its golden-stone architecture and authentic local charm. It’s also conveniently located near stunning natural parks and beaches. Be sure to check out the art galleries and enjoy fresh meals at the local restaurants. Afterward, head to Mondragó Natural Park, famous for its pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear blue sea. Or, if you’re in the mood for adventure, swim and snorkel in the turquoise waters of Cala del Moro, Cala Llombars, or Cala Santanyí.

Platja des Coll Baix

I had so much fun hiking to this secluded beach, surrounded by wild goats on the cliffs, that I just had to include it in the list. Located on the northern coast near Port d’Alcudia, this hidden gem is only accessible by boat or via a challenging hike. But that’s exactly what makes it so special and gives you a sense of escape with your own private beach. If you’re sailing around the island, definitely spend the night here. Otherwise, get your body ready for a good workout followed by a serene beach day and don’t forget to pack water and snacks!

Palmanova

When you’re in the mood for a shopping spree, this resort town has plenty to offer, including the nearby Porto Pi shopping center. The waterfront promenade is lined with restaurants and bars, perfect for a relaxing break after some retail therapy. As Mallorca becomes an increasingly popular hub for digital nomads and attracts international crowds, you’ll find plenty of co-working spaces and events happening all over the island, especially in Palmanova. If that’s your scene, keep an eye out for the latest happenings!

Ses Illetes

Just a short drive from Palma, near Portals Nous and Cala Mayor, this resort town has everything you need for the perfect beach day! It’s ideal for those who want a laid-back beach experience without straying too far from Palma, with easy access to all the amenities.

Mom’s in Mallorca!

Cala Pi

A beautiful, protected beach with golden sand, dramatic cliffs, and pine trees. Definitely worth spending a couple of hours here and adding this spot to your cala hopping itinerary for the day!

Platja d’es Trenc

Though many people recommended this beach when I first arrived in Mallorca, I wasn’t particularly impressed. The beach boasts a long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters, so it’s worth a visit. During my visit, I noticed a lot of washed-up seaweed, and although no tall buildings spoil the view, the facilities remain limited. If you go, make sure to bring your own mats, umbrella, and snacks!

Cheers to an island summer.

Platja de Can Pere Antoni & Portixol

Definitely worth a mention is the city beach of Palma, just a short walk from the historical old town. It’s conveniently located in front of the Cathedral of Palma, and surprisingly quieter than you’d expect compared to other more remote beach options. The promenade runs alongside it, perfect for cycling or just enjoying the sea views. For a sunset stroll, the scenic walkway will take you to Portixol. This former fishing village now has new restaurants and bars popping up every day, and it’s one of my absolute favourites!

Mallorca Nightlife: Bars, Clubs & Private Parties

Though it may not be Ibiza, Mallorca still offers plenty of nightlife options once the sun sets. Here are some of my top recommendations:

Catch me on a rooftop.

  • The Hotel Hostal Cuba: The Sky Bar rooftop offers a breathtaking view of the Bay of Palma and is an absolute must-visit during your trip. It tends to get very busy in high season, so reservations are advisable.
  • The Jazz Lounge: For when you’re in the mood for some live jazz, there is no better spot than this. Grab a drink and enjoy the talent of the local artists in the center of Palma.
  • Brooklyn: An edgy club in the heart of Santa Catalina, known for having one of the best underground house music scenes on the island. Resident and guest DJs pack the place most nights, keeping the vibe alive and buzzing.
  • Moltabarra: A popular hangout spot for locals any day of the week. This tapas bar offers tons of different moltaditos (small tapas) to enjoy with your drink. The interior is super artsy with handmade decorations. Order a Fernet, and you might get taken upstairs for a surprise!
  • Lío Mallorca: Looking for a place that combines fine dining with a unique cabaret-style show, which later transforms into a chic nightclub—think South of France style? This is the spot! For more on that elegant party vibe, check out my guide to the South of France.
  • Magaluf & S’Arenal Cliché: I’ve warned you several times to avoid these areas, but if you’re curious and want to see this wild side of the island, get ready to meet drunken bachelors and feel like you’ve stepped into St. Patrick’s Day or Oktoberfest! To sing along to German party anthems all night and truly live the full Mallorca experience, head to Megapark!
  • Bar Abaco: Absolutely stunning botanical cocktail bar with a magical atmosphere. Put on your fanciest outfit and get ready to feel like you’ve been transported to Queen’s England! Very Instagrammable indoors, although no photos are allowed.
  • Selva Club: Also known as Selva Secret Society, this members-only club is just a short taxi ride from Palma’s center. If you arrive early enough and spots are available, you can pay at the door. This hidden Berlin-style venue brings authentic techno vibes and fills up quickly!
  • Private villa parties: These are worth a mention, as a lot of the island’s real nightlife actually revolves around them. The combo of warm, starry nights and no neighbors to bother makes for the perfect party setting. So, if you find yourself invited to a private gathering somewhere inland definitely say yes!

Yachting, Arts, Events, and Beyond…

There’s always something happening in Mallorca, no matter the time of year. The island draws a unique mix of yachties, holidaymakers, retirees, digital nomads, artists, and people exploring alternative lifestyles. So, no matter your vibe, you’re bound to find your tribe here.

Yachting Events

Sunset catamaran cruise?

Palma International Boat Show

Held at the start of the Mediterranean yachting season, this annual event showcases luxury superyachts. Whether you’re looking to charter, buy, or simply admire, it’s a must-see!

Party Boats and Catamarans

Several companies offer half-day or full-day charters, as well as sunset booze cruises. If you’re after a lively party on the water, this is your go-to!

Art Events

La Nit de l’Art

A highlight of Mallorca’s art scene, this event takes place every September. Palma transforms into a massive open-air gallery, with the streets lined by artists and visitors. Museums and galleries are open to the public for free during this celebration of creativity.

Workshops and Classes

In true artistic fashion, Mallorca offers a variety of painting, drawing, and writing workshops. I personally loved being part of a weekly writing community where we gathered to write and share our work.

Wellness & Yoga Events

From tantra healing and yoga to women’s and men’s circles, Mallorca is all about mental and physical rejuvenation. As soon as you step onto the island, you’ll find yourself welcomed into various wellness events that encourage you to connect and grow.
